In May we spent a week in Sicilia after a couple of idyllic days on the vulcano Island Salina. We decided to stay in Siracusa to explore the east coast and Etna. Here are our best tips:
Fist up, you definitely should rent a car. Exploring Italy by public transport is not such a good idea. If you are staying in Sicacusa make sure to book a hotel or AirBnb in Ortigia, which is known by the locals as the most charming place to be. We rented an Airbnb with a roof terrace which was quite perfect. Go see the Ortigia market, and grab a freshly made panini and a glass of freshly pressed orange juice from La Salumeria at the end of the road – whey are to die for! There are a lot of great restaurants. Our two favourites was Pizza Sicilia and Sicilian Tavola (recommended by the locals).
For day trips we recommend going to Noto (the idyllic city from Italian movies) to see the square and have a Granita at Cafe Sicilia (world famous). If you would like to see Etna, we spent one of our afternoons learning and trying natural wines in beautiful surroundings at Davide’s vineyard Etnella (which is located on Etna). We found it very inspiring. We brough home some crazy bottles of wine!
Another idyllic place is Marianeddi which is a restaurant and bed and breakfast. There is also a secret beach (they will tell you the way when you get there). Next time we will definitely also stay at Marianeddi, best food we had in this trip.
If you have any quiestions you are very welcome to write us.
